Purpose of the catalogue
The UXIDU Public Domain Literature Library exists to make accessible a curated selection of public-domain texts, each accompanied by editorial notes that help readers orient themselves without claiming comprehensive analysis. The catalogue is designed for readers interested in historical literature, not for academic citation or commercial reuse.
Scope and selection
The collection contains 92 English-language texts, primarily juvenile fiction from the 19th and early 20th centuries, sourced from Project Gutenberg. Selections are made by Arthur Conrad, Collection Editor, based on availability, cultural interest, and the potential for useful editorial commentary. No texts are excluded on ideological grounds; all are presented as historical documents.
Source attribution
Every book record clearly states the original author, illustrator, and publisher (Project Gutenberg). The catalogue does not claim ownership of the texts themselves. Editorial content is original to this site and is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
Bibliographic records
Each record includes title, author(s), illustrator(s), publisher, Library of Congress subject headings, and a catalogue note. Subject headings are taken directly from the source and may not fully reflect the content; readers are encouraged to use the note as a supplement.
Category assignment
Texts are grouped into four categories: School, Friendship & Growing Up; Sea Voyages & Shipwrecks; Technology Airships Imagined Futures; and Social and Psychological Fiction. These categories are provisional and based on predominant themes; they are not authoritative literary classifications. A single work could reasonably belong to multiple categories.
Editorial reading context
Each catalogue note is written after reading excerpts—typically the opening, middle, and later portions—of the text. These observations are intended to highlight narrative structure, diction, and recurring motifs, not to provide a full summary or interpretation. The editor does not claim to have read every book in its entirety.
Edition facts and text measurements
All texts are from Project Gutenberg; specific edition numbers are not tracked. Word counts and publication dates are omitted unless present in the source metadata. The catalogue notes focus on textual features rather than bibliographic details.
Recommendations and related works
Within each category guide, three books are recommended with explanations. These are personal selections by the editor, intended to illustrate the category's range, not to create a canonical list. Related works are suggested within the archive page only, as reading paths.
